New Option for Church Donations:

Note: The Auto-draft option continues to be available – this is simply a new additional option.

New Sweden Church is now set up to receive offerings electronically via PayPal. If you don’t already have a PayPal account you can download the PayPal app to your mobile phone or you can go to www.paypal.com to register and set up your PayPal account. You can link it directly to your bank account or a credit card. Once you’re set up and your bank account or credit card has been verified you are ready to send money to others. The easiest way to make contributions to the church is by using the church’s PayPal.me link. Click on https://paypal.me/newswedenofferings and you’ll see the following:

Set the desired amount and follow the prompts. You will see an “Add a message” field. If you want to designate a donation to a specific fund, you can indicate the desired fund in this field. Michelle will transfer it to the appropriate fund. Michelle will also have visibility to all donations for the purpose of tracking charitable contributions for year-end statements.

PLEAE NOTE: PayPal can be used to send money WITHOUT INCURING ANY FEES, but you MUST TAKE AN ACTION to ensure this. PayPal allows two types of transfers:

  • “for goods and services”: This is NOT what you want. Making an offering to the church is NOT a purchase of goods or services and does not require paying a fee.
  • “friends and family”: This is the type you want and does not involve any fees if you have linked your bank account to your PayPal account (note that if you linked a credit card to your PayPal account there will still be a credit card processing fee and it will be charged to you, not the church).

The first time you send money to the church the default will likely be “for goods and services” and you’ll need to change that. Depending on if you’re using a mobile app or using a webpage, there will either be a checked box indicating “for goods and services” or a statement “for goods and services” with an arrow “>” to the right of it.

Be sure to uncheck the box OR select the arrow and change the option to “friends and family”.

Once you set this the first time, it should become the default for future contributions to the Church; just double check to be sure.

In addition to using PayPal.me you can make offerings directly from within the PayPal application using the option to “Send money”. To find our “New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Church” account, type in the following email address into the search field: newswedenofferings@gmail.com, then select it as the recipient. Michelle Wenzel is the owner and administrator of this email and it is specifically used for our Church’s PayPal account. You can now enter the amount you want transferred from your account. The funds will be electronically sent to the New Sweden Church general fund by default.

As with the PayPal.me option:

  • you can use the “Add a message” field to designate a donation to a specific fund
  • MAKE SURE you uncheck “for goods and services” box OR select the arrow and change the option to “friends and family” to avoid any fees.

Let Byron or Michelle know if you have any questions or need help setting it up.

Summary

Santa Lucia is celebrated each year at New Sweden Lutheran Church. In Sweden, St. Lucia Day, celebrated on December 13th, proclaims the arrival of the Christmas season.
Traditionally, St. Lucia, usually the eldest daughter, is dressed in a white gown with a red sash around her waist. She is adorned with a crown of lingonberry branches with four lighted candles. She carries coffee and a breakfast of sun-colored saffron buns and gingerbread cookies to her parents. Her sisters and brothers follow, all dressed in white. The girls carry lit candles and the boys (star boys) wear tall pointed hats.
Lucia is also known as the Queen of Light and she symbolizes hope during the darkest time of year.

Legend of Lucia

Santa Lucia was born of noble and wealthy parents in Sicily and was christened Lucia, from lux meaning light. Her father died when she was a infant and her mother raised her in the Christian faith. She vowed at a early age to remain a virgin and to devote her life to serving Christ an the poor. She did not tell anyone about this. Her mother wanted her to marry a man who was not a believer and Lucia resisted.

A story tells of Lucia bringing food to Christians hiding in caves. There are many accounts of miracles about her. One year when Sweden was going through a famine and people did not have much to eat,a brilliantly lit ship came sailing across the stormy waters of Lake Vannam. A beautiful young women dressed all in white stood at the helm and her face was radiant and a glow of light was all about her head. It was Lucia who came with a ship load of food for the hungry and she gave it to all who where in need.

Lucia would not renounce her faith. She was martyred on December 13 at the age of 20 years. Thus the celebration of Santa Lucia continues on December 13 in many places and the emphasis is on Christian love and sacrifice. In Sweden, The eldest daughter in the house plays the part of Lucia and brings coffee and food to members of the family early in the morning of December 13.

Santa Lucia is remembered for her sacrificial giving to the poor and her devotion to Christ.
