Rev. Hans Lillejord has served the New Sweden congregation since June of 2003. Rev. Lillejord was born in Lanesboro, Minnesota where he attended school until graduating with a bachelor of arts in English and later a masters degree in theology from Luther Theological Seminary. He subsequently pursued advanced graduate work in clinical training, specializing in youth and marriage counseling. He then earned a degree in health care administration from the University of Minnesota.
Rev. Lillejord has served parishes in Mobridge, South Dakota, as well as Thief River Falls, Brownton and Wykoff, Minnesota. He interned at Hope Lutheran Church in San Mateo, California and served as chaplain and religion teacher at Seabury Hall High School, and Episcopal college preparatory high school in Maui, Hawaii. While there he also served as associate pastor at St. John's Episcopal Church.
Rev. Lillejord has always held a secular occupation while serving the church, maintaining that the "worker-priest" provided a venue for practical, hands on insight and understanding of his parishioners, as well as providing mental stimulus. His many hats include nursing home administrator, locksmith and the marketing of a number of new businesses. He currently serves New Sweden and works with Krav Maga Self Defense Training Centers.
In his spare time, he enjoys golf, tennis, tinkling the ivories and acting. The latter being his passion, he has held numerous leading and supporting roles, the last portrayal being being that of Harry Truman, in 'Give 'Em Hell Harry', a one man show. He has been an extra in four motion pictures and been in three television commercials. In 1994 he was the runner-up in the Toastmaster's International World Championship of Public Speaking.
Rev. Lillejord's wife Marletta teaches horseback riding and operates an equestrian center. He has two children, Hans Jr. of Minneapolis and Kersten K. of Austin.
